6 Things College Students Should Do before GraduatingDeborah Kay

Take advantage of this digital trend to save everything

author01 Debbie Kay 06/19/2015

Use Evernote to save anything of interest that you see on the internet. Some people use OneNote but Evernote is still the best for me.

Install the Chrome Browser clipper and clip any article that catches your eye. Evernote allows you to save the entire article, a section of it, a simplified version (with ads, side bars and unnecessary graphics removed, as well as screenshots)

Any screenshots or images can be annotated using Skitch, a sister company

Scannable is a very sophisticated iphone scanner that allows you to scan documents with a high level of accuracy using your phone.

Evernote allows you to create Notebooks and Tags. There are different schools of thought as to how you can use them. The main difference being that Notebooks are limited to 250, can be stacked but cannot be nested, and an article cannot be in more than one notebook.

Tags however can go up to 100,000 - which is more than a person needs. One can also tag a note with multiple tags (e.g. by topic, by source, by teammate, by due date), allowing multiple hierachies to be created (what this means is that you can view organise your notes in any of those 4 different ways - whereas if you invert the method, you can only create notebooks by topic. Or by source.)

One popular way of organising is to keep only 4 or 5 Notebooks:

  1. To Do
  2. Shared notes
  3. Library
  4. Reference (e.g. for receipts, tax statements, important documents)

The powerful part comes with the tagging. It is suggested that notes are tagged by topic (protip: use a . before the .topic as that will group all the topics together when viewing tags, use @ before @sources / @author and other special characters to separate products, work, pleasure) as well as by author or source.

It is then suggested that every now and then, you review your tags and get rid of the ones that only have one or two notes in them

The truth is, even though I use this system of tagging, I seldom ever use tags or notebooks because the search function is so powerful in Evernote, it can even search for notes within saved PDFs. The only time when I might use a notebook is when I am trying to write an article and I keep refering to the same notes so I want them in an easy to find place. Another tip is to pin the important notes or the ones that you are currently working on in the short-cut menu that can be found in the side bar.

When organising sources Keep a collection of favourite quotes. Start a mood board for photographs or grahics that you like from Instragram or Pinterest or Wookrank. Then try to replicate it. Save interesting Twitter bios or tweets. Try that style out. The important thing is to note down your observations, learnings and insights. After a purchase, Tim Ferriss would try to remember what triggered the purchase and write it down. Save it before you forget it.

My Trello Board

Free Inbound Marketing Resources

Trello is a fantastic tool for project management and collaboration

It started with one Trello cardthat I made for another project that I decided to share with on Twitter with Andy Crestodina at Orbit Media. That became a 3-way convo between two other bloggers (my earliest interactions on Twitter - which made me marvel at how friendly bloggers were). At that time, I had no idea that all three are famous in their own way (Andy was on Onalytica's Top 100 most influential people in content marketing can be found on multiple lists of influencers in marketing. Since then, Trello has featured it and I use Medium to drive traffic to it and vice versa!

But it was Annie Cushing and her amazing SEO spreadsheet with hundreds of links to SEO tools that made me think if she an do it, so can I. Since then, I've discovered Saijo George, who has built multiple collections: free stock photos, website builders, marketing tools, css puns and most recently code snippets.

At Vero, Chris Hexton and Jimmy Daly give away all their secrets for free (along with everyone else's email marketing secrets). Startup Stash is a well known website for curating the best resources any start up needs at any point in time.

Sharing our secrets goes against everything we are taught.

Building trust, credibility and connections is the best thing that you can do. With everything opensource, there is no benefit to keeping your secrets to yourself - any good idea that you have, someone has already thought about it. 20 years ago. Show the world that you're one step ahead. Give away your secrets. And force yourself to keep creating new idea.s
